The general rule for the HOPE and Lifetime Learning Credits is that the credit follows the exemption. If your child attends a post-secondary institution, you need to claim them to take the credits. A common problem occurs when the child files their return without consulting their parents.

Another counter-intuitive section allows the parent to claim the Education Credits when they are paid for by the student’s grandparents.
