Welcome to the Tax Tips Blog. This blog will be updated to provide new tax tips though out the year. It can be used to keep track of income tax news. It can be syndicated to be delivered to you desk-top using the orange boxes on the SideBar. You need a newsreader to do that, but you can get SharpReader for free. I found that learning about newreaders was easy, and taught me about another option for keeping up with this changing world.

I live in the UK. My tax year has been starting in April of each year. Is it okay to file my US tax return starting in the month of April and ending in the month of April or do I need to start from January and end in December?

Being located in Minnesota, I have limited experience with International returns, yet I'd handle the situation by reporting all income for the year 2007 on your 2007 return. The United Kingdom has what I'd call a fiscal year as opposed to a calendar year for its income taxes. Some of your U.K. tax forms may be based on their calender year, and since their tax year ends after ours, they may not be available by April 15th.

It is quite rare that the IRS allows individuals to file using a fiscal(for instance 4/1/07 to 3/30/08) year, so I'd have to say, you have to use a calender year. This is going to require more bookkeeping so that your U.S. income is accurately reported. Accounting sometimes is about timing differences. What year your income falls into, can be important.
