Married taxpayers filing options

Married couples have three filing options: Married Filing Joint (MFJ), Married Filing Separate (MFS), and Head of Household (HOH). Though MFS is generally the worst filing option, there are cases where it makes sense. When one spouse has high medical or miscellaneous deductions it might pay to go MFS, and there are other situations, for example, an impending divorce may make MFS the wisest, though not cheapest alternative.
Head of Household status can be claimed if: You have lived apart from your spouse for at least the last six months of the year, you had a dependent child living with you for at least the last six months of the year, and you provided over half the support for the household. In almost all cases, HOH is preferred over MFS.
Almost all tax software will run a MFJ versus MFS comparison. Remember to attribute all income and deductions to the proper spouse when entering your data.
