Aluminum Can Deduction

Some non-profits set up a trailer in a local parking lot and people drop off their cans, which the non-profits turn in at a recycling center. In order for you to take a charitable deduction, the IRS requires that the organization be a 501(c)(3) non-profit. The non-profit will be able to tell you if it is? Let’s assume that the value of your cans is less than $250 for the year, in that case the IRS says you are not required to have a receipt if it is impractical to get one, for example, if you leave property at a charity's unattended drop site.
It’s my opinion that you can take this deduction for your aluminum cans, yet I would still appreciate your comments about it. I recommend keeping a schedule of the donations you made, and obtaining a written acknowledgement even though it is not required. There are related issues if your total non-cash charitable deductions exceed $500 for the year, that might effect your decision to take the aluminum can deduction. See IRS form 8283 and its instructions, or leave a comment.
