Penalties for paying your federal taxes late are based upon what you owe and generally are 1/2% per month, which is a manageable 6% a year up to a total of 25% if you don't pay for 5 months. The failure to file penalty is the real problem. It is 4 1/2% per month up to a total of 22.5%. This one stops after five months though, at the 22.5% limit.

I found a nice page that covers your options if you are assessed these penalties. Abating penalties is an uphill battle, but worth a try. The link is to McKenzie Law and the quote below is from their page:
